CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team travels to Asheville, North Carolina this weekend for the 2019 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championships presented by General Shale.
The Bulldogs are the No. 10 seed in the tournament and will face off against No. 7 seed Samford in the opening round. The winner will advance to the quarterfinal round to face No. 2 seed UNCG at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
THE CITADEL BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
The Citadel heads into the tournament in the top 50 in the nation in five statistical categories. The Bulldogs are second in NCAA Division I in total 3-pointers made (357), 3-point field goals attempted (1,031) and 3-pointers made per game (12.3). The 'Dogs are also fourth in scoring, averaging 85.6 points per game, and are 42nd in assists per game (15.6).
STALLWORTH NATIONALLY
Lew Stallworth is currently in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in five statistical categories, including tied for 17th in assists per game, tied for 20th with 181 assists, tied for 23rd with 221 made field goals, 39 with 586 points and 42nd in scoring average.
FRIERSON NATIONALLY
Matt Frierson heads into this week in the top 15 in NCAA Division I in three 3-point categories. Frierson is currently seventh in 3-pointers made per game (3.64), tied for seventh in 3-point field goals attempted (272) and tied for 11th in total 3-pointers made (102).
NAJDAWI NATIONALLY
Zane Najdawi enters this weekend's conference tournament tied for 41st in the nation in blocked shots per game.
STALLWORTH, NAJDAWI EARN ALL-SOCON HONORS
Stallworth and Najdawi have been named All-Southern Conference selections, it was announced by the league office Wednesday. Stallworth was a second-team selection by both the coaches and the media, while Najdawi was tabbed to the media's third team. Stallworth was also named to the HoopsHD.com All-Southern Conference team, marking the third straight season the Bulldogs have had a player named to the list after Najdawi was named to the team each of the last two seasons. Najdawi is just the 11th Citadel basketball player in program history to earn all-conference honors in multiple seasons, and he is the first since
Mike Groselle (2011-12, 2012-13) to earn All-SoCon honors in back-to-back years.
COACH BAUCOM IN THE WIN COLUMN
The Bulldogs boast 12 wins on the year, marking the fifth straight year the 'Dogs have won at least 10 games. It is the first time since the stretch from the 1993-94 season to the 1997-98 season that The Citadel has posted double-digit wins in five-straight seasons. The four straight double-digit wins in
Duggar Baucom's first four years mark the first time since
Norm Sloan from the 1956-57 season to the 1959-60 campaign that a head coach has won at least 10 games in his first four seasons. Sloan and Baucom are the only head coaches in program history to win double-digit games in each of their first four seasons in Charleston.
THE HISTORY WITH SAMFORD
The Citadel holds a 12-10 record over Samford dating back to the 1991-92 season. The Bulldogs from Charleston won the first meeting, 73-67, in Charleston on Feb. 19, 1992. The Citadel won five games in a row over the Bulldogs from Birmingham from Jan. 16, 2010 - Jan. 7, 2012. The two programs split the regular-season meetings with each team winning on their home floor. Samford defeated The Citadel 80-77 in Birmingham on Jan. 17, and The Citadel claimed an 87-83 win in overtime in Charleston on Feb. 23.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS FROM BIRMINGHAM
Samford heads into the tournament with a 16-15 record, having ended the regular season on a four-game losing skid. The Bulldogs started the season off by winning seven of their first eight games with the lone loss in that stretch being on the road at No. 23 Ohio State. This season, the Bulldogs have averaged 77.8 points per game, while their foes have scored 75.5 points per contest. Samford has connected on 46.9 percent of its field goals, while opponents have converted 41.8 percent from the field. Samford averages 7.7 made 3-pointers per game, but the Bulldogs have given up 9.8 treys per outing. The Bulldogs have managed to shoot 37.2 percent from beyond the arc compared to 35.5 percent by their foes.
THE BULLDOGS FROM BIRMINGHAM INDIVIDUALLY
The Bulldogs feature four players averaging double-digit points led by
Josh Sharkey's 16.6 points per game. The point guard also leads the team with 35.5 minutes and 7.7 assists per outing, while shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
Ruben Guerrero averages 13.5 points per game,
Brandon Austin adds 12.6 points per outing and
Myron Gordon chips in 12.3 points per contest. Austin leads the squad with 82 made 3-pointers, an average of 2.6 per game, and Guerrero is averaging 8.3 rebounds per contest and has 65 blocks. Freshman
Robert Allen is just on the outside looking in for double figures with 9.6 points per contest and leads the team with 8.4 boards per outing. Guerrero is shooting 59.7 percent from the field. Sharkey, Guerrero and Gordon have started every game. Austin has made 30 starts and Allen has started 29 games.
