Weekend Preview: Bulldogs Travel to Wofford for Game on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 After being off from outside competition for a week, The Citadel basketball team returns to action this weekend with a game at Wofford on Saturday, Jan. 11. Tipoff from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.

PACK THE MAC
The Bulldogs' annual Pack the Mac event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 against VMI. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and the entire South Carolina Corps of Cadets will be in attendance. The game will also serve as The Citadel's annual Military Appreciation Day, and The Citadel Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day at that game as well.

LAST TIME OUT
The Citadel basketball team went toe-to-toe with a team on the rise on Jan. 4, but ultimately came up just short down the stretch as the Bulldogs fell to Western Carolina, 86-82, helped by three Catamounts free throws in the final 25 seconds. With 55 seconds remaining, freshman Fletcher Abee hit one of his team-high three 3-pointers to give The Citadel a one-point, 82-81 lead, but the Cats closed the game out with a 5-0 run, including a layup from Carlos Dotson and free throws from Dotson and Mason Faulkner, to secure the win. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 61.1% (22-of-36) in the first half and ended the game shooting 50.0% (34-of-68) from the field, but connected on just 28.6% (8-of-28) of their 3-point attempts. Western Carolina shot 46.8% (29-of-62) from the field for the game, including converting 15 of their 34 3-point attempts (.441). The difference proved to be free throws as the Catamounts shot 65.0% (13-of-20) from the charity stripe compared to just 40.0% (6-of-15) for the Bulldogs. Abee and Tyson Batiste led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points each. The 18 points marked a career high for Batiste. Batiste added six assists and five rebounds. Western Carolina was led by Onno Steger's game-high 28 points, including a game-high eight triples.

THE BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
The Citadel enters the weekend in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in six different statistical categories, including in the top 20 in four of those. The Bulldogs are fifth in the nation in scoring with an average of 83.6 points per outing and are tied for fifth with 10.7 3-pointers made per game. The Citadel is also tied for 17th with 150 made 3-pointers and 18th with an average of 16.9 assists per game. The 'Dogs are 26th in the nation with 426 3-point field goal attempts and tied for 46th with 237 total assists.

TYSON WITH THE ASSIST
Batiste enters this weekend tied for 17th in NCAA Division I with 6.3 assists per game and tied for 25th with 88 total assists.

RICE NATIONALLY
Junior Kaiden Rice enters the weekend ranked tied for 20th in the nation with an average of 3.14 3-pointers made per game. Rice is also tied for 33rd in the nation with 118 3-point field goal attempts and tied for 37th with 44 treys.

RICE CLIMBING THE RANKS
Rice boasts 148 3-pointers made in his career, a mark that has him ranked 12th in program history. He is 12 treys away from cracking the top 10 in program history.

THE HISTORY WITH WOFFORD
Wofford holds a 58-49 record over the Bulldogs, including sweeping the series last season. Wofford owns a 29-18 mark in Spartanburg with the last Bulldog victory in Spartanburg coming during the 2016-17 season when the 'Dogs defeated the Terriers 104-103 in overtime. The Citadel last won in the series on Feb. 1, 2018 with an 80-78 thriller in Charleston.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Wofford is the defending Southern Conference champions and enters Saturday with an overall record of 10-6. After going 18-0 last season in conference play, the Terriers are 2-1 to start league play with wins over UNC Greensboro and Samford. The Terriers also boast wins over High Point, Maryland-Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central, Gardner-Webb, Kennesaw State and then 16th-ranked North Carolina. Wofford heads into the weekend averaging 74.0 points per game compared to 68.4 points per outing by their opponents. Wofford is currently shooting 46.2% from the field and 38.6% from beyond the 3-point arc. Their foes have connected on 44.1% of shots from the field, including 33.3% from long range. Wofford is ranked seventh in NCAA Division I for 3-pointers made per game (10.6) and tied for fourth in total treys made (176).

WOFFORD INDIVIDUALLY
Nathan Hoover and Storm Murphy lead the Terriers in scoring with 13.6 points per game each. Hoover boasts one more 3-pointer made than Murphy with 38 and Hoover is ranked 10th in the nation with 134 3-point field goal attempts. Murphy leads the team with 37 assists. The next three highest scorers for Wofford are Chevez Goodwin (9.9 ppg), Tray Hollowell (8.8 ppg) and Trevor Stumpe (7.4 ppg). Messiah Jones leads the way in shooting percentage, connecting on 63.9% of his shots from the field, but Murphy has converted 50.0% of his shots from long range. Under the basket, Goodwin boasts 6.4 rebounds per game with Hoover second on the team with an average of 4.4.  Goodwin also boasts 20 blocked shots. Hoover, Goodwin and Stumpe have started all 16 games for the Terriers. Murphy has started 15 games and Ryan Larson has started 14.

COMING UP
The Citadel will play two Southern Conference games next week, one at home and one on the road. The Bulldogs will host UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Jan. 15 for a 7 p.m. tipoff before making the trek up to Lexington, Virginia to tangle with VMI for the first time this season on Saturday, Jan. 18. The game against the Keydets will feature a 1 p.m. tipoff.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags). The bags may have a logo on one side that is no larger than 4.5 inches by 3.4 inches. Bags carrying a properly sized logo of other teams or venues are permitted. "Pick 6 Pack" packages are now available for the upcoming 2019-20 Citadel basketball season and can be purchased through The Citadel Ticket Office for $72.
