Weekly Preview: Bulldogs Host Wofford Wednesday, Travel to Mercer Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 The Citadel basketball team will close out the current two-game homestand before hitting the road this weekend. The Bulldogs host Wofford on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to close out the month of January before hitting the road for Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Tipoff against Wofford will be at 7 p.m. The game is sponsored by the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL).

Saturday's game in Macon will tip off at 4:30 p.m. The game at Mercer will be the first game this season the Bulldogs will be featured on the Southern Conference's Nexstar package. The game between The Citadel and Mercer will be carried by six local television markets in Charleston (WCBD), Roanoke, Virginia (WWCW), Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville (WYCW), Johnson City, Tennessee (WJHL), Greensboro/High Point (WGHP) and Macon (WMUB).

PACK THE MAC
The Bulldogs' annual Pack the Mac event, presented by APECS (Asia-Pacific Engineering Consulting Services), will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 against VMI. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and the entire South Carolina Corps of Cadets will be in attendance. The game will also serve as The Citadel's annual Military Appreciation Day, and The Citadel Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day at that game as well.

LAST TIME OUT
The Citadel basketball team fell to in-state rival Furman by a score of 78-54 at McAlister Field House Saturday afternoon. The score changed hands 11 times and was tied four times in the first half as the Bulldogs managed to hang with the Paladins for the first 20 minutes. Furman opened the second half on a 14-0 run, taking advantage of two Citadel turnovers and six missed shots by the 'Dogs to establish a 51-30 lead nearly 3:30 into the period. For the game, The Citadel shot 36.2% (17-of-47) from the field after opening the game by shooting 43.5% (10-of-23) in the first half. The Bulldogs converted just four of their 25 3-point attempts (.160). Furman ended the game shooting 42.9% (27-of-63) from the field, including 35.7% (10-of-28) from beyond the 3-point arc. Fletcher Abee led the Bulldogs with 15 points, including three made 3-pointers. Furman's Clay Mounce led all scorers with 22 points, including four made treys.

TYSON WITH THE ASSIST NATIONALLY
Tyson Batiste enters the week ranked 22nd in NCAA Division I with 6.2 assists per game and tied for 25th with 117 total assists.

TYSON CLOSING IN
With his seven assists against Furman, Batiste now boasts 117 on the year. He is just two assists away from cracking the top 15 in program history for assists in a single season.

RICE BEYOND THE ARC NATIONALLY
Kaiden Rice enters the week ranked 37th in NCAA Division I with an average of 2.95 made 3-pointers per game, tied for 36th in the nation with 154 3-point field goal attempts and tied for 46th with 56 made triples.

SPENCE SWATTING AWAY SHOTS
Freshman Brady Spence swatted away two shots on Jan. 25 against Furman, giving him 17 for the season. He is now tied for 10th in program history for blocked shots by a freshman. He has blocked multiple shots in five games.

ABEE CLOSING IN
With his three made 3-pointers against Furman, Abee now has 49 for the season. He is one trey away from ninth in program history for made 3-pointers by a freshman in a single season.

THE HISTORY WITH WOFFORD
Wofford holds a 59-49 record over the Bulldogs. The Citadel holds a 31-28 record over the Terriers in Charleston. The Citadel last won in the series on Feb. 1, 2018 with an 80-78 thriller inside McAlister Field House.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Wofford heads into Wednesday's game with an overall record of 13-8, having gone 2-2 since the last time these two teams met. The Terriers are currently 4-7 on the road, including having dropped their last two road tilts. After going 18-0 last season in conference play, the Terriers are currently 5-3 in league play. Wofford heads into the weekend averaging 72.4 points per game compared to 67.9 points per outing by their opponents. Wofford is currently shooting 45.4% from the field and 36.2% from beyond the 3-point arc. Their foes have connected on 43.7% of shots from the field, including 32.9% from long range. Wofford is 12th in the nation with 210 made 3-pointer and the Terriers are tied with Furman for 18th in NCAA Division I for 3-pointers made per game (10.0).

WOFFORD INDIVIDUALLY
Nathan Hoover and Storm Murphy lead the Terriers in scoring with 14.7 points and 12.4 per game, respectively. Hoover boasts a team-high 50 made 3-pointers, while Murphy is second with 40. Hoover is tied for 12th in the nation with 171 3-point field goal attempts. Murphy leads the team with 58 assists. The next four highest scorers for Wofford are Chevez Goodwin (10.2 ppg), Tray Hollowell (8.5 ppg), Messiah Jones (7.2 ppg) and Trevor Stumpe (7.0 ppg). Jones leads the squad in shooting percentage, connecting on 66.3% of his shots from the field, and Murphy leads the team in shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, having converted 42.1% of his shots from long range. Under the basket, Goodwin boasts 6.0 rebounds per game with Jones second on the team with an average of 4.2 boards per game and Hoover third with an average of 4.1. Goodwin also boasts 20 blocked shots. Hoover, Goodwin and Stumpe have started all 21 games for the Terriers. Murphy has started 20 games and Ryan Larson has started 18. Hollowell is the only other player to have started a game, having made four starts.

THE HISTORY WITH MERCER
Mercer holds a 16-7 overall record against The Citadel, including 7-4 in Macon. As SoCon foes, Mercer is 7-3 all-time against the Bulldogs. The Citadel heads into the weekend having won three of the last four games between the two, including both contests last season. In the last meeting between the two, The Citadel claimed a 67-61 win in Macon. The win marked the first time in the history of the series that the Bulldogs had won in Macon in back-to-back seasons. It was also just the second time the Bulldogs had won back-to-back games in Macon.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
Mercer is currently 10-11 overall with a 4-4 mark in SoCon play. The Bears are 6-4 at home and have won four straight games heading into Wednesday's contest at ETSU. Mercer averages 72.7 points per outing, but their foes average 72.1 points per game. The Bears are currently shooting 45.0% from the field with their opponent having connected on 43.6% of their looks. Mercer averages 7.6 3-pointer per game, while hitting 36.9% of their attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. The Bears' foes have converted 7.7 treys per game, while converting shots from long range at a .338 clip. Mercer is currently out-rebounding opponents by a margin of +3.5 (36.0-32.5).

MERCER INDIVIDUALLY
Mercer is led in scoring by Djordje Dimitrijevic's 18.1 points per game. The senior guard leads the team with 65 assists and is shooting 44.6% from the field and 40.3% from beyond the 3-point arc, including having converted a team-best 48 triples. Behind Dimitrijevic, fellow senior Ethan Stair is close to averaging a double-double with 16.1 points and a team-best 8.8 rebounds per game. Stair, who is the only player to have started all 21 games, shoots 48.0% from the field and is second on the team with 45 made 3-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Jeff Gary is the only other player to average double figures, having scored 10.7 points per game in his 11 games this season. James Glisson III is the next highest scorer of those players who have played the majority of Mercer's games, averaging 6.3 points per outing. Glisson is shooting 50.4% from the field and averaged 3.4 boards per game. Maciej Bender is second on the team with 5.1 boards per game to go along with 6.1 points per game. Dimitrijevic has started 20 games, Bender has started 17 games, Daniel Love has started 11 contests, and Glisson and Gary have each started nine games.

COMING UP
Next week, the Bulldogs will travel to UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Feb. 5 before hosting rival VMI on Saturday, Feb. 8 for the Bulldogs' annual Pack the Mac game presented by APECS. The game at UNCG will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN3. The Bulldogs' home game against VMI is slated for a 1 p.m. tipoff on ESPN+.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags). The bags may have a logo on one side that is no larger than 4.5 inches by 3.4 inches. Bags carrying a properly sized logo of other teams or venues are permitted.
