The Citadel, Samford Set for First "Battle of the Bulldogs" in Two Years Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel (9-12, 3-7) welcomes Samford (14-8, 4-6) to McAlister Field House for the first time since Feb. 15, 2020 this Saturday at 1 p.m. in SoCon play.

ON THE RADIO AND ESPN+
All games for the 2021-22 season will be carried on 102.1FM and 1450AM. The voice of the Bulldogs, Luke Mauro, returns for his fourth season behind the mic. The game can be seen on ESPN+ with Kyle West and Jason Kempf on the call.

NUMBERS CALLED, NUMBERS ANSWERED
The Citadel's reserves had their chance to shine in the second half Wednesday at Furman, netting 36 bench points. Rudy Fitzgibbons led the bench with 11 points on three 3-pointers. Dylan Engler connected for eight points and four rebounds, going a perfect 2-for-2 on threes, in 12 minutes of action. Brock Wakefield had six points with one triple and one block.

RISING THROUGH THE RANKS!
Jason Roche made seven 3-pointers at Furman Wednesday for his second-highest single game total, tying the all-time freshman season school record of 80 set by Fletcher Abee (2019-20). Stephen Clark is fourth all-time in school history with 116 career blocks, while his 54 swats this season puts him at sixth all-time. Hayden Brown became the eighth person in school history to reach 1,200 points and 600 rebounds, currently at 1,202 points for 19th all-time and 606 boards for ninth all-time.

ROCHE ON THE EDGE OF GLORY

He is currently slotted seventh all-time in the overall season record book. The California native continues to lead the SoCon with 35.8 minutes played and 3.8 made threes per game.

TALES FROM THE "TRIP"
Armed with freshman shooting phenom Jason Roche and the capable long-range shooting of Tyler Moffe, David Maynard, Rudy Fitzgibbons III and plenty others, The Citadel is 224-of-648 from 3-point range this season. The Bulldogs are 7-6 when they make at least ten threes, but 0-5 when opponents match said feat. This was prevalent in Wednesday's matchup at Furman, where the Paladins soared to 16 threes, making 14 in the first half alone and hitting on 12 of their first 15 3-point attempts for 63 points by halftime.

HISTORY WITH SAMFORD
One of The Citadel's newest conference rivals, the battle of the Bulldogs has the Birmingham, Alabama school narrowly ahead 13-12 in the all-time series. They met only twice before Samford became SoCon members for the 2008-09 season. This is their first meeting in two seasons due to the COVID-affected 2020-21 year. Samford won both meetings on Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, 2020.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Samford rides into Charleston with a three-game win streak against SoCon foes Mercer, Western Carolina, and Chattanooga. Though the team ranks average around the SoCon Point guard Ques Glover is a dual threat, dishing out 4.3 assists per game that ranks second in the SoCon and his 18.2 ppg. ranking fourth. His touch at the free throw line ranks atop the SoCon at 88.3 percent (83-94). Forward Jermaine Marshall ranks third in the conference averaging 7.8 rpg.

LINEUP CHANGE
After using the same starters in all but one of the first 15 games, head coach Duggar Baucom inserted David Maynard in the starting lineup, giving the graduate transfer the first starts of his career. Jackson Price also made his first career start at Furman on Feb. 2.
