CHARLESTON, S.C. – A penalty kick goal by the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers was the difference in a 1-0 defensive struggle on Thursday afternoon at WLI Field.
How It Happened:
4' – CIT had an early chance as
Maggie Melogy's cross from the left side of the box was sent high over the crossbar by
Ariana Paez.
10' – ETSU almost had a breakaway after a deflected through ball up the middle of the pitch, but the CIT defense closed down the angle as Sampson handled the shot to the center of the frame.
26' – The Bucs fired one from just outside the 18' but
Nora Sampson's diving save to the right post kept the match scoreless.
31' – A pair of nice passes by The Citadel set up Paez for a header in the box but the tall Bucs goalkeeper easily made the save.
61' – After an ETSU handball just outside the 18', Paez's free kick attempt sailed over the top right side of the crossbar on CIT's best chance of the match.
68' – This time the Buccaneers missed high over the crossbar after The Citadel was given a red card on a loose ball at the 20'.
76' – Third time was the charm as a handball finally led to a goal on the scoreboard as a CIT foul in the box earned ETSU a penalty kick that was finished off by Matherne.
The Bulldogs were unable to muster a shot in the final 14 minutes.
