HAMPTON, Va. – In its last match of the 2016 Virginia Duals, the Citadel wrestling team defeated SoCon foe Campbell 22-17 to improve to 4-3 this year.
Heading into the 197-pound match, the Bulldogs trailed 17-16 but behind a 6-2 win from senior
Marshall Haas and a 7-4 decision from heavyweight

The Citadel jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind
Patrick Kearney, who picked up his second win in as many matches at 125 pounds. Campbell then took its first lead of the dual after
Caleb Smith was pinned in 2:35.
The Bulldogs proceeded to reel off three straight victories with
Ty Buckiso,
Matt Frisch and
Aaron Walker all picking up wins to give The Citadel a 12-6 lead heading into the 165 matchup. Walker was the only Bulldog to go 4-0 in the tournament and improved to 15-5 this season.
Campbell picked up another win by fall at 165 to even the score at 12-12 but a huge win by
Tim Knipl at 174 pounds over Matthew Olauson returned the lead to The Citadel's favor. The victory marked the freshman's first dual win this season.
The Camels won just one more matchup at 184 before upperclassmen Haas and Bexley took over to seal the win.
The Citadel returns to the mat Jan. 17 for two duals in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Citadel will face SoCon foe Southern Illinois Edwardsville at noon and then Northern Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Results will be available at CitadelSports.com.
