CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's basketball team returns to action after having the last 9 days off to focus on exams. The Bulldogs take on Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 15 (1 p.m.) to close out a four-game homestand before traveling to Campbell on Tuesday, Dec. 18 (7 p.m.).
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
Saturday's 1 p.m. home game against Southeast Missouri is sponsored by Ashley Homestore and Seel's Outboard. The Bulldogs' Toys for Tots Toy Drive will wrap up with fans being admitted for $5 if they bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game. Fans can receive a free ticket for kids 12 and under with the purchase of an adult ticket. Halftime will feature a performance by the Charleston Sparks.
ON THIS DATE IN CITADEL BASKETBALL HISTORY
The Citadel is 11-3 all-time on Dec. 15, according to The Citadel basketball record book. The Bulldogs won the first eight games on this date, but have dropped the last two. The first recorded win on this date came back in 1951, 68-59, on the road at Erskine. The Citadel also boasts wins over College of Charleston, Clemson, Loyola, Richmond (2), East Carolina and Wofford on this date. The last win on Dec. 15 came back in 2007, 79-55, over Point.
FAST START UNDER BAUCOM
The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 on the year with the win over Johnson & Wales, marking the best start through nine games since the 2004-05 team started the year 7-2 under
Pat Dennis.
FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK
The current five-game winning streak is the longest since the 2009-10 team won five games in a row over Samford, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, Elon and Western Carolina from Feb. 4-18 under the direction of
Ed Conroy. The 2009-10 team was Conroy's final team in Charleston, and the Bulldogs went 16-16.
ECLIPSING THE CENTURY MARK UNDER BAUCOM
With the 127-93 win over Johnson & Wales, the Bulldogs improved to 18-3 under head coach
Duggar Baucom when scoring at least 100 points. The 'Dogs have eclipsed the century mark in four games this season and are 4-0 in those games after going 5-1 last season and 7-2 two years ago.
SCORING 60 POINTS IN A HALF
The Bulldogs scored 64 points in the first half against Johnson & Wales, marking the 11th-most points scored in an opening stanza in program history. It is the fourth time this season the 'Dogs have scored at least 60 in a first half. The 'Dogs netted 63 points in the second half, tied for the 12th-most points scored in a second half in program history. It is the third time this season The Citadel has scored at least 60 points in a second half.
THE STARTING FIVE GETTING IT DONE
The game against Johnson & Wales on Dec. 5 marked the third game in a row the Bulldogs had four of their starting five end the game in double-digit scoring.
Zane Najdawi (23),
Matt Frierson (15),
Connor Kern (14) and
Lew Stallworth (19) all finished with double-digit points for the Bulldogs, as did
Quayson Williams (10) and
Kaiden Rice (16) off the bench.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE DUO
Najdawi and Stallworth each finished the win over Johnson & Wales with a double-double, marking the second time this season a duo has accomplished the feat together. The last time it happened, Stallworth finished with 13 points and 13 assists and
Hayden Brown scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds in the win over Johnson (Fla.).
BREAKING INTO THE TOP 10
Najdawi broke into the top 10 for points scored in a career in the win over Johnson & Wales. He now stands alone in 10th with 1,324 career points, an average of 12.6 per game in his four seasons in Charleston.
CENTURY START FOR NAJDAWI
The game against Johnson & Wales marked the 100
th career start for Najdawi. He is just the 10th Bulldog to start 100 games.
BLOCK PARTY FOR NAJDAWI
With his two blocks against Johnson & Wales, Najdawi has now swatted away multiple shots in 45 career games. He boasts 159 blocked shots for his career.
STALLWORTH WITH THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Stallworth recorded his fourth double-double of the year against Johnson & Wales. It was the fifth of his career and his third in a row as he finished his 28 minutes of work with 19 points and 10 assists. In the Bulldogs' last five games, Stallworth has averaged 19.4 points, 7.6 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game.
FRIERSON KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE
With his five 3-pointers made against Johnson & Wales, Frierson has now converted at least one trey in 47 consecutive games. He has also made at least four 3-pointers in 32 career games, including each of the last four.
THE BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
The Citadel ranks in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in 10 statistical categories, including leading the nation in scoring (103.0 points per game) and 3-pointers made per game (15.2). The 'Dogs are second in total 3-pointers made (137), fifth in total 3-point attempts (340) and 13th in both assist-to-turnover ratio (1.57) and field goal percentage (.505). The Bulldogs are also 17th in 3-point field goal percentage (.403), tied for 17th in the nation in total assists (180) and 37th in steals per game (8.6).
STALLWORTH NATIONALLY
Stallworth enters the weekend tied for ninth in the nation with an average of 7.0 assists per game, and he is tied for 14th with 63 total assists. He is also tied for 27th in the nation with his four double-doubles and is 49th with a .581 field goal percentage.
FRIERSON NATIONALLY
Frierson enters the weekend second in NCAA Division I, and tops in the SoCon, with an average of 5.11 3-pointers per game and 46 total treys converted. He is also sixth in the country with 98 3-point attempts.
THE HISTORY WITH SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Saturday's game against Southeast Missouri will mark the first meeting between the two programs on the hardwood. It will also be the first game of a home-and-home series between the two as the Bulldogs will make the trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Southeast Missouri enters Saturday's game with a 5-5 overall record, including 1-3 on the road and 2-3 in the last five games. The Redhawks boast wins over Quincy, Jacksonville, Chattanooga, Missouri S&T and Mississippi Valley State and are coming off a 10-point, 83-73 loss at home to Southern Illinois on Dec. 8. For the year, SEMO averages 70.7 points per game and has held their opponents to 68.0 points per game. The Redhawks are currently turning the ball over 14 times per game. The Redhawks have been led in scoring by
Skylar Hogan,
Ledarrius Brewer and
Alex Caldwell. Hogan comes into Saturday's game averaging 12.8 points and 2.0 3-pointers per game, and he is SEMO's biggest 3-point threat as he shoots 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. Brewer is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.1 points per game, and rebounding, as he has corralled in 6.0 rebounds per outing. Caldwell is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.6 points per contest. Under the basket,
Sage Tolbert leads the team with 6.5 boards per contest and
Gabe McGlothan has a team-high eight blocks.
Jonathan Dalton leads the team with 35 assists on the year, an average of 3.5 per game. Brewer, Tolbert, Dalton and
Isaiah Gable have started all 10 games, while Hogan has started nine of the Redhawks' 10 contests.
THE HISTORY WITH CAMPBELL
Campbell controls the all-time series, having won six of the seven matchups between the two programs, including each of the last three. The Camels have won all three meetings in Buies Creek, including an 87-77 decision last season. The Bulldogs' lone victory in the series, a 68-50 decision in Charleston, came back on Jan. 8, 1983 in the Holy City Hoops Classic. The Bulldogs and Camels have met each of the last three seasons.
SCOUTING THE CAMELS
Campbell enters Tuesday night's game 5-4 on the year, including boasting a 3-1 mark at home. Campbell has won three of their last five games, including a neutral-site, 78-72 win over Austin Peay, a home victory over Trinity Baptist, 79-29, and a 100-53 win over Central Penn at home on Dec. 13. The Camels are averaging 80.1 points per game with their opponents scoring an average of 72.0 per outing, and Campbell has connected on 48.6 percent of their attempts from the field, including an average of 9.7 3-pointers per game. Campbell is led by senior guard
Chris Clemons who is averaging 31.0 points, 35.1 minutes and 6.3 rebounds per game. Clemons is currently shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. The next closest scorer is
Isaac Chatman with 10.3 points per game, while
Cory Gensler averages 9.1 points per contest. Chatman has connected on 52.7 percent of his attempts from the field.
Andrew Eudy has a team-high 31 assists on the season. Eudy is second on the team with 4.9 boards per game and has a team-high 10 blocks. Clemons, Gensler and Eudy have started all nine games with Chatman having started eight.
