Williamson Heroics, Gill Leadoff Score Propels Bulldogs, Edges Gardner-Webb 2-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Fueled by a first-half goal from Adrianna Gill as well as a decisive go-ahead score off the head of Alice Williamson, The Citadel women's soccer program fought off a pesky Gardner-Webb squad in a return to the win column, ousting the visiting Bulldogs behind a 2-1 mark Thursday evening at Washington Light Infrantry Field.

Overall, The Citadel and GWU proved relatively even across each of the offensive categories, as the former narrowly led in total shots (18-to-15), the latter edged out in corner kicks (4-to-3) and the duo matched up in shots-on-goal with five apiece. Gill opened the scoring with an athletic goal at the 29', turning a sharp pass from Adrienne Trerotola into a well-deserved assist moments later via an arcing shot into the top-left corner.

Gardner-Webb responded in the second half following an offensive surge in production, scoring off a rebounded save early in the 53'; the draw failed to hold for long, however, as Williamson and Co. battled down into the box for a header attempt, finding the back of the net for the eventual game-winner courtesy an assist from Charlotte Seay.

Individually, Samantha Grantham menaced the GWU defense with a match-best five shots, one of which clanged off the cross bar early in the opening half, while both Williamson and Gabi Macer tallied three shots one one-on-goal apiece. In net, Lizzy Passwaters held down the fort with four saves and one goal allowed, playing all 90 minutes for the Bulldogs between the pipes.

For the match, The Citadel recorded a pair of yellow cards -- Elisa Fuentes at the 59' and Macer in the 70'.
